SafeWork NSW is undergoing an exciting and important period of transformation as we establish the organisation as a modern, strong and standalone Work Health and Safety Regulator. In preparation for these changes, we are opening an Inspector talent pool recruitment process where successful candidates will be eligible to be selected for opportunities that may become available over the next 18 months.

About us

SafeWork NSW is the state's workplace health and safety regulator. Our focus is to reduce work
related fatalities, serious injuries and illnesses by securing compliance with work health and safety and associated legislation. We do this by undertaking a mix of responsive and proactive programs of work focused on high risk harms across all industries, aligned to our strategic plan and regulatory priorities.

We're seeking diverse and dynamic people eager to start their career as a SafeWork NSW Inspector and help make a real impact to the health and safety of workers across NSW.
We have Inspectors based throughout Sydney Metro and Regional NSW including Albury, Ballina, Bega, Coffs Harbour, Dubbo, Gosford, Goulburn, Griffith, Londonderry, Narrabri, Newcastle, Nowra, Orange, Parramatta, Port Macquarie, Sydney, Tamworth, Thornleigh, Maitland, Wagga Wagga and Wollongong.

A career as an Inspector with SafeWork NSW offers:

  • A 38-hour work week including some weekends and participation in the After-Hours Emergency Response Service (AHERS)

  • Fully paid 12-month New Inspector Training Program (NITP) with a nationally recognised qualification.

The NITP is an intensive program delivered by our Registered Training Organisation and combines mandatory components of induction, in-class training, online learning, completion of set assessments and tasks and extensive on-the-job field experience including regular travel throughout NSW for the duration of the training program.

About the role

SafeWork NSW Inspectors apply their industry knowledge, experience and training to work in partnership with NSW workplaces to assist them to meet and maintain work health and safety standards so that workers return home safely.
Inspector responsibilities include:

  • Undertake proactive site inspections, respond to customer requests, complete preliminary incident investigations, deliver presentations and work with major industry stakeholders to improve safety standards
  • Provide advice regarding safe work practices, return to work and how to comply with NSW work health and safety laws
  • Collect relevant information, applying transparent evidence-based decision making to improve safety
  • Produce high quality reports to confirm actions taken
  • Ensure internal administrative compliance by completing travel, expense and time keeping records
  • Contribute to a positive, supportive and engaging workplace.

What we are looking for

Ideal candidates will have strong interpersonal skills with a passion for work health and safety and return to work.

  • Strong communication skills to engage and influence key stakeholders to improve regulatory outcomes
  • High-level written communication skills and an ability to understand comprehensive and technical reports
  • Ability to interpret and apply multiple pieces of complex legislation
  • Well established resilience skills, the ability to manage competing priorities in a timely manner and work collaboratively within a diverse team
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of digital technology tools including proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field, transferable skills and/or industry experience are desirable but not essential.

Essential requirements

  • Willingness and ability to undertake work-related travel across NSW and occasionally inter-state, work from and stay in remote locations and work outside of usual business hours
  • Hold a current NSW 'C' class driver licence with a satisfactory safe driving record and a requirement to maintain the safe driving record throughout employment
  • Undertake and achieve a satisfactory criminal record check
  • Undertake and achieve a satisfactory medical assessment capacity regarding physical and psychological impacts of the inherent duties of the role
  • Successfully complete the 12-month New Inspector Training Program (NITP).

Appointment and ongoing assignment may be subject to restrictions and satisfactory participation in mandatory pre-employment and ongoing probity screening in accordance with relevant legislation and/or related policies.
