We’re currently seeking qualified Fitters & Turners to join our dedicated maintenance team at our South Johnstone Sugar Mill. With both permanent and fixed-term roles on offer, this is your chance to work with one of the region’s most important industries, just a short drive from Innisfail.

About the Role

As a Fitter & Turner, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring the mechanical reliability of our operations. You’ll be involved in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of factory equipment and machinery, supporting both planned and reactive maintenance tasks. Your technical skills will help prevent breakdowns, ensure efficient operations, and contribute to a safe and productive work environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Respond promptly to mechanical breakdowns to minimise downtime

• Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance

• Troubleshoot and repair a range of mechanical issues

• Perform general and intermediate machining and fitting tasks

• Safely operate hand and power tools, grinders, and oxy-acetylene equipment

• Undertake welding and fabrication work within your competencies

• Use work orders to manage jobs and record parts usage

• Complete time sheets and provide clear maintenance documentation

• Support start-up and shutdown procedures

• Conduct dogging for crane operations as required

• Maintain a safe, clean, and organised workspace

• Collaborate with supervisors and other trades to report and schedule repairs

What We’re Looking For

• Trade qualification as a Fitter & Turner

• Steam Turbine High Risk Licence (TO) preferred

• Experience in the sugar industry or similar heavy industrial environment highly regarded

• Additional skills or licences an advantage:

  • Forklift, or dogging licence

  • Working at Heights or Elevated Work Platform tickets

• C Class Driver’s Licence

• Strong communication, time management, and teamwork skills

• Proactive, collaborative, and safety-focused approach

The power station uses a 100% renewable sugarcane fibre known as bagasse to produce 24 megawatts of electricity – which, after commissioning, will be enough to power every house in the Tablelands region.
